Four local groups are bringing trophies home to Vancouver from the 2012 Canadian Comedy Awards in Toronto.

The Sunday Service took home top honours Sunday night as the country’s best improv troupe. Most of the group remained in Toronto after a performance there on Friday night, and were in attendance at the Concert Hall at the Fairmont Royal York. Caitlin Howden, Emmett Hall, Aaron Read, Craig Anderson and Taz VanRassel took the stage to pick up the trophy from Vancouver Theatresports improv legend, Colin Mochrie.

Ryan Beil, who had to fly back to Vancouver for work just before the ceremony, told The Vancouver Sun, “It means so much to win this award and hopefully bring some much deserved national focus to the comedy that happens out west.”

The acceptance speech was made by VanRassel who was up against Beil for best male improviser.

Vancouver troupes were also multimedia comedy champs.

The very funny and awesome Caitlin Howden from Toronto is officially a member of The Sunday Service!!! The Hilarity bar just got risen even higher!!!

The Sunday Service is a comedy group that produces a weekly show held at The Kozmik Zoo Lounge in Vancouver BC Canada. As well as a monthly podcast (A beautiful podcast) on the internets.

Starring- Taz VanRassel, Ryan Beil, Kevin Lee
Emmett Hall (piano), Craig Anderson and Aaron Read.

Since their humble beginnings in 2005, The Sunday Service has quickly become the toast of Vancouver’s alternative comedy scene with their unique blend of improvised theatre.

Coming from a wide variety of backgrounds and disciplines, these six performers deliver a style rarely seen in Vancouver. They skirt the line of meta-comedy, rock opera, witty word play and slap stick shtick, combining it all for an addictive cocktail that makes habitual users out of even the most casual observer.

Their dedication to performing and producing their weekly show, speaks highly of their love of comedy and live performance. Missing only two shows per year (for Christmas and New-Years), this constant barrage of pressure is quickly turned into inspiration and an appreciation that can only be achieved through hard work.

With six Canadian Comedy Award nominations under their collective belt, these lil’ fire-scamps are certainly pulling the heart strings and punching the laugh faces of new audiences everywhere.

“This is the DFA 1979 of theatre: escapist, absurd and entertaining above all, but always based on real personalities that just happen to be grappling with hilarious situations.”
-Marlaina Mah, Discorder Magazine

“A young comedy troupe holds a packed room enthralled with a two-hour improvisational routine. Young comics Ryan Beil, Taz Van Rassel, Aaron Read and Kevin Lee perform weekly as stars of The Sunday Service…”
