We are very excited to be hosting 4 exciting line up all through this week starting With the last session of ONE IN THE CHAMBER SERIES for a couple of month on Tuesday Feb 21st.

How you ever experienced listening to beautiful classical music in an absolutely relaxing environment (Let’s say your neighbourhood bar!) while sipping on your favourite drink? Then you should NOT miss this one!

The Fourth installment in our wee chamber music series.

Dave Ito Chokroun is a musician, multimedia artist, composer, and writer. He has been a featured artist at Open Space, Western Front, Vancouver Art Gallery, Art Gallery of Calgary, and in the Vancouver Jazz Festival, and has played with everyone from James Tenney to Jandek.
Dave will be performing JS Bach’s Suite for Solo Cello #2 in D minor on double bass.

Meris Goodman is a multidisciplinary performer and member of the Dusty
Flowerpot Cabaret, specializing in singing, Balinese gamelan and
dance, and clown, and social awkwardness. She is deeply passionate
about all of these endeavours, and endeavours to combine them into a
most intriguing performance art…
Meris will be performing works by Puccini, Strauss, Mozart, and Handel with Robyn Jacobs on piano.

Patrick Jennings is a guitarist who plays fingerstyle jazz, classical and flamenco.
Patrick has studied in Quebec (Domaine Forget Music Academy for several summers), and at Uvic.
He will be performing two Afro Cuban Neo-Classical by Leo Brouwer, a fingerstyle arrangement of somewhere over the rainbow,and a fun jazzy piece by Andrew York.

Come early and have dinner at the Zoo and stick around for drinks and music.

Soft Morning City Live @ The Kozmik Zoo

Soft Morning City is the latest project of Saxophonist/Composer John Paton. The project was originally conceived as a vehicle to play with former Vancouver based drummer Ivan Bamford. The unique two guitar/no bass instrumentation is spacious yet full while leaving plenty of space for the drummer to leave his mark. After a successful debut at one of Vancouver’s growing creative venues, El Barrio, the band teamed up with Vancouver-based drummer Paul Townsend to record a five song demo at the Warehouse Studio in Vancouver. Currently, the group is collaborating with Cole Schmidt on an artist-in-residency at their favourite creative music venue and hopes to document its music further in the future.

The line-up is:

Cole Schmidt – Guitar
Sam King – Guitar
Paul Townsend – Drums

Robots On Fire & The Bletchley Bombes

After more than fifty years of Cecil Taylor, Ornette Coleman, and Albert Ayler, what does it mean to be playing in the free jazz (avant-garde?) tradition?
Is this just another kind of bourgeois white guy revival music with vague pretensions to class rebellion?
Is free music the new Dixieland?
All will be revealed in an evening of musical entertainment by Robots On Fire and The Bletchley Bombes.
The Bletchley Bombes play the music of iconoclastic jazz composers such as Thelonious Monk, Grachan Moncur III, Eric Dolphy, and Steve Lacy. This quintet performs with a focus on the spontaneous, and the unexpected; bucking some of the common practices of jazz performance. The Bombes are led by baritone saxophonist/bass clarinetist Shane Krause, and features trumpeter Eric Weiden, tenor saxophonist Dominic Conway, drummer Ben Brown and guest bassist Tommy Babin.
Founded by saxophonist Darren Williams and bassist Dave Chokroun in 2002, Robots On Fire is about taking musical traditions, blowing them up, and playing the pieces – including the tradition of taking the tradition, blowing it up, and playing the pieces. With a sound resembling a Peter Brötzmann/Albert Ayler/Ornette Coleman mashup and pushing the boundaries of extended instrumental technique, the Robots play original compositions, incendiary improvisations, protest songs, and free jazz “classics.” Live performances have included collaborations with Eugene Chadbourne, Han Bennink, and Mats Gustafsson. Robots on Fire are Dave Chokroun (bass), John Mutter (guitar), Kevin Romain (drums), Jonathon Wilcke (alto sax), and Darren Williams (tenor sax).

The feast of St. AmmaR Feat. CAST, Reuben Bullock and DJ Thrillswitch:
Fire dance in the street, massive jam sessions, getting plastered and passing out under the kitchen table, waking up with the one who shouldn’t be and finally getting pepper sprayed! We had it all for the past few years, now we’re gonna party with a couple of coolest bands out there Ben Brown’s CAST and all the way from Alberta the very talented Reuben Bullock. Reuben’s band was supposed to sell out the Biltmore but they got cancelled due to some “technical issues” and we are damn lucky enough to have them that night.
Just announced : DJ Thrillswitch will spin some old school funk,R&B and hip hop before,between and after the sets!

COME DOWN TO THE KOZMIK ZOO ON SAT 28th FOR MAD PARTYING (and possibly the most reasonable drinks you can get at any bar that night with the exception of the hoe!)

“Reuben Bullock unassumingly holds huge influence in Calgary’s burgeoning new art and folk movement. Whether it’s directing the on going roster of Market Collective musicians, co-producing Shot at the Dark music videos or playing for hours in full cafes, empty tunnels, or old city buses, Bullock is a fresh breath for traditionalism.”( welcometothewest.ca ) His debut
album, “pulling up arrows” is already attracting attention for its subtle arrangements and rich lyrics. Working with producer/multi-instrumentalist Jay Crocker, Reuben used a minimalistic approach to recording the album. In a tool shed-turned recording studio, “pulling up arrows” took shape using all analog recording equipment, placing an emphasis on the process as much as the finished product. “Bullock’s voice is intimate and immediate;
note-perfect to deliver his testaments and make them resonate.He somehow manages to evoke some of the greatest folk singers without even once sounding imitative.”-( ffwdweekly.com ) In short, music that remembers and forgets. The way death affects life and heartache molds love, these songs share memories and tell stories. The rich, layered lyrics of Reuben Bullock, follow simple melodies and slip below the surface into the depths of the ocean. Calm and Powerful.
